Looking back on 2013, there was no shortage of those deserving of Texas Lawyer’s annual Tongue-in-Cheek awards. But, as always, there were a few standouts who really should receive this dubious recognition.
Gov. Rick Perry wins the Vexatious Veto Award for his threat to veto—and ultimate veto of—state funding for the Public Integrity Unit in the wake of Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg’s arrest and guilty plea for driving while intoxicated. Perry threatened to veto the funding unless Lehmberg resigned. When Lehmberg refused to do so, Perry lost the opportunity to appoint someone to the D.A.’s job. With the stroke of his veto pen, Perry cut off the unit’s state money, leaving Travis County taxpayers to foot the bill. It’s another “oops” for the governor.
