Manager fired without cause awarded $2.6 million

On Oct. 15, 2013, a jury awarded $2.6 million to a facility manager at Pinnacle Engineering and Pinnacle Project Services Inc. who was fired for falsely representing that he had a chemical engineering degree. He was offered $1.36 million in severance and was asked to sign a five-year nonsolicitation agreement, which he refused. The company then fired him for cause and refused to pay him any severance. Houde had signed two shareholders’ agreements during his employment. Both agreements stated that Houde would receive a severance package that was detailed and calculated in the agreements if he was terminated without cause. Neither agreement said that Houde would have to sign a nonsolicitation agreement.
