Plaintiffs lawyer Mikal Watts and his firm Watts Guerra have cited a pending criminal investigation as their reason for seeking to stay a lawsuit filed against them by BP Exploration & Production Inc. They filed a motion to stay proceedings on Jan. 17 in BP Exploration & Production Inc. v. Mikal Watts in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

One month earlier, on Dec. 17, 2013, BP filed a complaint, alleging that Watts and his firm filed claims related to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico for “clients” whom the lawyer and law firm did not represent—allegations that Watts and the firm strenuously have denied.
