Moving a high-profile capital murder trial in North Texas can be an extremely risky proposition, given recent history. Both the prosecution and the defense can end up on the losing side in a venue change.

For example, in 1996 when defense lawyers for Darlie Routier moved for a change of venue from Dallas County, the trial judge moved her case to Kerr County, where a much more conservative jury sentenced Routier to death in 1997. She has appealed and remains on death row.
