A South Texas corruption scandal centering on a former district court judge who pleaded guilty to a bribery-related racketeering charge has already sent several lawyers to prison. On Feb. 11, former Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos found out that he will spend the next 13 years of his life there, too, because of his role in the scandal.

In addition to the long federal prison sentence, U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen of Brownsville ordered Villalobos to pay $339,000 in restitution and pay a $30,000 fine, according to the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER), the federal courts’ online document-filing system.
