Not only did David Hodges win a $1.61 million jury award for his client in a medical-malpractice case, he also discovered the potential boon provided by a judge’s individual questioning of prospective jurors.

“I was initially opposed to his method,” Hodges said about 55th District Judge Jeff Shadwick in Houston who presided over the case. “But then I found it extremely insightful. People who I would have stricken for cause, when I heard them answer questions at the bench, I changed my mind,” said Hodges, a partner in Houston’s Kennedy Hodges.
