When Houston’s W. Mark Lanier won a verdict in a pharmaceutical case that includes $9 billion in punitive damages, it was not just the largest of his career; he says it’s the largest-ever personal injury verdict in the United States.

“This is a jury who decided to make their voice heard all the way around to Japan,” Lanier said about the April 7 verdict, which assesses $6 billion in punitive damage against Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A. and related Takeda companies, plus $3 billion in punitives against Eli Lilly and Co.
