In the secure area of a midsized Texas county courthouse, a bailiff called out, looking for the lawyers on a particular case. One of these lawyers responded, “Here we are. We’re the lawyers on that case.” Seeing them, the bailiff stated, “I don’t know you.” Then, the bailiff said, “Show me your bar cards.”
The two lawyers were female and African-American. They each doubted that the bailiff asked Anglo lawyers with whom he was unfamiliar to show them their bar cards. This incensed them, but they were there to represent their clients.
