Lawyers throughout the state need to prepare Houston employers for their obligations under the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO).

For starters, the ordinance will reach more employers as time passes. For the first year after enactment, the ordinance covers employers with 50 or more employees. On the first anniversary of enactment—the Houston city council passed and the mayor signed the HERO on May 28—employers with 25 employees are covered. On the second anniversary, employers with 15 employees fall within the ordinance’s scope.
