First off, “The Black-Eyed Blonde: A Phillip Marlowe Novel” in which Benjamin Black channels Phillip Marlowe, the noir P.I. created by Raymond Chandler. Business is slow, and Marlowe notes at the novel’s start that it was one of “those Tuesday afternoons in summer when you wonder if the earth has stopped revolving. The telephone on my desk had the air of something that knows it’s being watched.”
