Michelle Fernald got a chance to deliver a decisive blow to a Mexican drug cartel’s drug trafficking, money-laundering and horse-racing operations.

Fernald, an assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Texas in Austin, has served since 2012 as co-counsel in the investigation and prosecution of Los Zetas defendants in United States v. Miguel Angel Trevino Morales. The May 30, 2012, superseding indictment in the case named 15 defendants allegedly involved in a conspiracy to commit money laundering.
