A plaintiff in a business dispute has moved to recuse 44th District Court Judge Carlos Cortez from hearing its case alleging that the lead defense counsel received favorable rulings while giving “large and curiously-timed contributions” to the jurist’s campaign, among other things, creating the appearance of bias.

The motion also alleges that Cortez used more than $186,353 in campaign funds to pay attorneys representing him in a criminal investigation and, separately, as part of his failed three-year battle to keep shocking statements by two female witnesses in connection with an unrelated defamation case from becoming public.
