Parties settle for $210,000 over age discrimination claim

A group of job candidates who claimed they were rejected because they were over age 50 agreed to a $210,000 settlement on Oct. 2. The Equal Employment Opportuntiy Commission sued Hi-Line Electric Co. on behalf of the applicants. Plaintiff’s counsel alleged that Hi-Line’s written recruitment guidelines for territory managers included age-based considerations. When the recruiter had asked a superior for clarification, she was given a printed text box that included an age range of 40 to 50 years old as a bulleted criterion. Plaintiff’s counsel maintained the application of this criteria resulted in seven otherwise-qualified territorial manager candidates over the age of 50 being rejected.
