I think we can learn a lot as lawyers from other disciplines, so I read with interest a book from sports trainer Jerry Lynch, “The Way of the Champion: Lessons From Sun Tzu’s The Art of War and Hither to Wisdom for Sports & Life.” He has an interesting twist on the typical advice on writing a mission statement for yourself. His twist: Do not include the ultimate goal in the statement but rather the process by which you can get to the goal. So, do not say, “In my life, I am on a mission to write a book.” Instead say, “In my life, I am on a mission to write three nights a week for three hours a night.”
By focusing on the process, victory is always achievable in the moment. And when pressure is taken off to get to the end result, a person or team becomes more relaxed and thus more able to reach a goal.
