The State Bar of Texas has been involved in at least 11 lawsuits over the past three years, and has paid over $40,000 to outside counsel for representation. But internal lawyers handled most of the cases, winning dismissals in all but one brand-new case.
Texas Lawyer examined legal invoices and litigation involving state bar defendants in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and found that the state bar hired two Austin-based firms to handle four lawsuits, and assigned lawyers within the Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel to represent bar defendants in six other cases. An 11th lawsuit was just filed Nov. 24, and the bar hasn’t assigned a lawyer yet, according to the federal courts’ Public Access to Court Electronic Records system.
