The State Bar of Texas counts over 90,000 members, each with the ability and know-how to sue their mandatory trade association—which includes an office with authority to discipline lawyers for misconduct. Despite those odds, lawsuits don’t target the state bar too often.

Texas Lawyer analyzed litigation involving the state bar in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and reviewed invoices to determine the bar’s litigation costs. In that time the State Bar of Texas has paid more than $40,000 in litigation costs and attorney fees for four lawsuits, and has internally handled the defense of six other lawsuits. Another lawsuit was just filed Nov. 24.
