When Gregg Costa got his commission to become a member of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit on June 2, 2014, he could have locked the chambers at his old job as Galveston’s U.S. district judge that day and never looked back.

Yet six months later, it’s almost as if Costa never departed the island’s wood-paneled courtroom. He has kept about 200 civil cases and another 60 criminal cases in the Galveston Division that he’s hearing by designation. And on Jan. 5, he began presiding over a two-week patent infringement trial.
