A Florida attorney who recommended that his clients hire local counsel in Texas is now battling to dodge a legal malpractice lawsuit between the client and the Texas firm.

The fight arose when Riggs, Aleshire & Ray of Austin was sued, along with two other Texas firms, for allegedly failing to perfect the plaintiffs’ security interest in the asset sale. When the buyer defaulted on payments and eventually went bankrupt, the alleged mistake ended up costing more than $1 million to plaintiffs Sight’s My Line Inc. and Stewart Lantz, according to the petition in Sight’s My Line v. Riggs, Aleshire & Ray, filed in Travis County district court.
