A Houston criminal defense lawyer said that a federal judge issued an “illegal sentence” against his client, who plans to appeal.
After Francisco Antonio Colorado Cessa pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to bribe a public official—U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks of Austin—he was sentenced on Feb. 2 to five years in federal prison, three years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment. The sentence will run consecutively with Cessa’s previous sentence for conspiracy to launder monetary instruments, related to funneling drug money for the Los Zetas drug organization in Mexico. Cessa and his codefendants conspired to bribe Sparks for a reduced sentence for Cessa’s previous conviction.
