Family awarded $2.4 million for claim that jailers ignored detainee’s medical problems
The family of a man who died from renal failure while in jail was awarded $2.4 million on Feb. 11. Robert Montano was arrested after he had been running around his neighborhood seeming to be under the influence. Montano had a history of mental health problems. He was taken to the Orange County jail and put in an observation cell called the bubble. He died in there five days later. The bubble was a concrete room with no toilet or running water. He did not eat or drink during his five days there because he was paranoid about being poisoned. He was nude the whole time and was never seen by a doctor. Prison staff covered the one window of the bubble with paper, which the family said was put up so no one would have to look at him.
