Cop’s arrest was justified, jury found
A police officer’s arrest of a teenager was justitifed, a jury found on March 5. Karlton L. Stephenson, 16, was arrested in the front yard of his parents’ house in southwest Houston. He was subsequently charged with evading lawful detention and taken to the Harris County Juvenile Center. Karlton claimed that Duncan lacked a reasonable suspicion to detain him, that Duncan lacked probable cause to arrest him for evading lawful detention, and that Duncan’s conduct was unreasonable in light of the law and in light of the facts known to him. Police had received an emergency dispatch call that a person was walking in a residential neighborhood carrying a gun. The report gave the location, gender, and race of the suspect, as well as a detailed description of his clothing.
