A senator has watered down his insurance reform bill to address plaintiffs lawyers’ claims that it was overreaching and would bring serious unintended consequences. But plaintiffs lawyers still maintain that it will hurt plaintiffs with valid property insurance claims, while some insurance defense attorneys say that it will help curb abuses while protecting valid claims.
Senators extensively debated Senate Bill 1628 and amended it 12 times before finally passing it, 21-10. If the measure becomes law, it would affect people who sue insurers, alleging that they handled property insurance claims unfairly or deceptively, or didn’t pay promptly.
