Energy executives face many dangers and unknowns (dry hole, price of oil falls lower, emergency board meeting and you aren’t invited). One fact of business life is often worse: getting sued.

Let’s face it; anyone in the energy business long enough is going to get sued. And with oil prices in the doldrums and energy regulation on the upswing, it’s now even more likely. One recent study indicates that there has already been a fivefold increase in energy-related lawsuits filed in Harris County and the Southern District of Texas alone (when comparing the first two weeks of January 2014 to the same period in 2015).
