On a regular weekday, Judge Thomas R. Culver III would don his suit and tie and head to the Fort Bend County Courthouse. Today, he’s wearing an orange fishing shirt and khaki shorts.

“Today is retirement,” said Culver, former judge of the 240th District Court in Richmond. “Retiring after 34 years on the bench is really kind of a bittersweet thing for me. … I’ve always been plugged into the justice system. It’s been a big part of my professional life. I’m 66, so I’ve been on the bench half of my life.”
