A Corpus Christi lawyer must surrender his law license and pay more than $77,000 after a grievance panel found that he committed misconduct by loaning one client’s money to another client who didn’t pay it back.

The judgment of disbarment in the case, Commission for Lawyer Discipline v. Maldonado, said that Michael Maldonado committed professional misconduct in his dealings with a 93-year-old client he represented from 2010 to 2013. Maldonado had details about the woman’s financial situation, including assets in investment accounts and annuities. He drove to her house in February 2013 and asked her to loan $70,000 to another one of his clients. Maldonado told the woman it “would be an appropriate and sound financial decision” and that Maldonado would guarantee the loan.
