In recent years a large number of lawsuits have been filed against oil refiners, fuel distributors and chemical makers involving the gasoline additive methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) based on allegations that the additive causes groundwater pollution.
In 2013, in New Hampshire v. Exxon Mobil, a jury awarded approximately $236 million in damages to the plaintiff, the state of New Hampshire, because of a finding of groundwater contamination from MTBE after a trial in superior court, according to the case background information set out in the appellate opinion recently issued by the New Hampshire Supreme Court.
