Trial lawyers fought and killed two 2015 bills that would have changed the way that property owners and health care providers sued insurance companies that shortchanged their claims or missed payment deadlines. Get ready for round No. 2 in those fights.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick recently announced interim charges for the Senate Business and Commerce Committee next spring to study and possibly recommend legislation. He asked the committee to study property claim lawsuits related to hailstorms and other weather events and examine whether they’re causing more expensive coverage and difficulty in finding and keeping coverage. He also told the committee to study the way that civil penalties are calculated under the state’s prompt pay law, which allows health care providers to sue insurance companies that don’t pay claims fully or in a timely manner.
