Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan Hecht has settled a campaign finance ethics case that began seven years ago. In the settlement, Hecht agreed to pay $1,000—$28,000 less than the fine initially imposed against Hecht by the Texas Ethics Commission in 2008, when the agency ruled that he had violated campaign finance rules by receiving a large discount on legal fees.
In the settlement terms, both Hecht and the TEC agreed that “a written statement concerning legal fees reduces the possibility of a misunderstanding about the fees.” In addition, Hecht agreed “to obtain a written fee agreement with any lawyer or law firm he hires to represent him, either before or within a reasonable time after the representation commences.”
