Waller County wants the mother of Sandra Bland to produce her daughter’s medical and mental health records. Bland, who was black, died in a county jail after a Texas state trooper stopped her for failing to use a turn signal. Bland’s death drew international attention and raised questions about the criminal justice system in that part of Texas and prompted Bland’s mother, Geneva Reed-Veal, to file in August a civil rights lawsuit in Houston federal court, naming the county, among others, as a defendant.
In a Dec. 1 filed reply supporting its motion to compel Reed-Veal to produce the records, the county argues that the mother has “not provided complete disclosures, responded to requests or production, or produced a single document in the case.” She has “refused to either produce, or to provide authorizations to release, Sandra Bland’s medical and mental health records,” stated the motion, which was filed by Larry Simmons of the Germer firm in Beaumont. Simmons did not return a call for comment.
