The recent ruling involving injured workers suing oil giant ExxonMobil is instructive for insurance companies in Texas that provide coverage for high-risk operations in the petrochemical business.

According to the factual and procedural background of the case set out in Fourteenth Court of Appeals’ opinion, a large explosion that injured four workers who were employed by a third-party contractor, Wyatt Field Services Company, occurred at the ExxonMobil refinery in Baytown on July 3, 2011. Litigation ensued with the four injured workers suing Exxon in the 125th District Court of Harris County.
