Storm damage in North Texas Christmas week led to 11 fatalities and millions of dollars in property damage, including some harm to those residents already suffering financial hardships. So, telephone responders at a legal hotline established by the State Bar of Texas for tornado victims will aim at connecting low-income callers with their local legal aid providers. The State Bar expects the callers to face a range of poststorm legal issues, including replacing lost documents, defending against price gouging and applying for insurance benefits. The hotline number is 800-504-7030. Amy Starnes, a State Bar spokeswoman, said the information technology office is still trying to determine how many calls have been received.
“It’s a bit tricky” to keep track, Starnes wrote in an email, because “the hotline asks the caller to identify where they live and then directly connects them with the legal aid provider in their area.”
