A federal judge in Houston recently dealt with a patent feud over drilling technology. The conflict focused on a casing centralizer, a device used to keep the casing or liner in the center of the wellbore in oil and gas operations.

U.S. District Judge Alfred Bennett presided over the claim construction hearing that centered on the design patent U.S. Patent 5,937,948, which was issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Plaintiffs Top-Co Inc. and Top-Co Cementing Products filed suit in 2013 against defendant Summit Energy Services, d/b/a Summit Casing Equipment, alleging patent infringement.
