Lawyers in Waco are divided over whether McLennan County should battle with the Texas office of the attorney general over keeping a prohibition on handguns in the local courthouse.

The McLennan County Commissioners Court recently voted to authorize its outside counsel to defend the courthouse handgun ban. The move came after the Texas office of the attorney general in a letter demanded the removal of signs prohibiting handgun license holders from bringing their guns into the courthouse. The AG’s office threatened civil liability under a 2015 law that prohibits governmental entities from posting signs barring concealed handguns on government premises.
