Texas Lawyer spoke to David Patton, a Houston partner with the firm of Locke Lord and former pipeliner in South Texas, about current trends in Texas related to the slump in oil and gas prices. Patton is involved in all aspects of the upstream and midstream industry, including title work, leasing, commercial and operational contracts, joint ventures and acquisitions and divestitures. In the recent downturn, as in several other down cycles, he has spent much of his time advising clients as to how to maneuver in times of financial stress.
Texas Lawyer: Please explain how your history of being a former oilfield worker (a pipeliner) affects how you practice energy law? What insights have you gained about the Texas oil and gas sector from having actually worked out in the oil fields?
