When Peter Linzer was in the market for a new barber years ago, he eyed the haircuts of his colleagues on the faculty at the University of Houston Law Center for possible leads.

Only a few haircuts made the short list, and Linzer ultimately approached Stephen Zamora—a longtime professor and former dean known around campus for his elegance, athleticism, personal warmth and passion for international law—for a reference.
