The window is quickly closing for President Barack Obama to fill 12 judicial vacancies in Texas—a state which leads the nation in empty seats on the bench and faces judicial emergencies in all four of its federal districts.

As he enters his final months in office, it appears that Obama has a chance of filling only about half of those vacancies before he departs the White House in 2017. The president nominated five Texans to fill U.S. District Court benches in March—all of whom have the support of Texas Republican U.S. Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz.
