A Texas federal judge has blocked a nationwide mandate by President Barack Obama’s administration that would allow transgender students in public schools to use bathroom facilities that matched their gender identity rather than their sex.

U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor of the Northern District of Texas ruled that the initiative by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Education ran afoul of Title IX of the U.S. Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits sex discrimination in public education.
