In the legal battle over Texas’ voter ID law, a Corpus Christi federal judge is moving forward with proceedings to determine whether state lawmakers had discriminatory intent when they passed the controversial statute.

U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos on Thursday rejected a request from the state defendants to postpone considering the issue pending an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court or until after the next scheduled state legislative session. Instead, the judge asked both sides to file their opening briefs by November and scheduled arguments for Jan. 24, 2017—only 14 days after Texas lawmakers are scheduled to meet again.
