With a wide range of agendas and goals, lawyers have waded into the troubled waters of how universities should best cope with allegations of sexual assault on campus.

Chad Dunn, a partner in Houston’s Brazil & Dunn, represents seven women who have a lawsuit against Baylor University in a Waco U.S. District Court, alleging that the school ignored allegations of sexual assault, and created an environment on campus that allowed further attacks to occur. The complaint, which alleges violations under both Title IX and federal civil rights statutes, was filed a month after Baylor’s Board of Regents demoted then-president Ken Starr, who has since left the school, and fired its head football coach, Art Briles. The regents made the move after an investigation commissioned by the university and conducted by Philadelphia law firm Pepper Hamilton determined that administrators did not adequately respond to accusations of several female students who alleged they were sexually assaulted by Baylor football players—and even discouraged the students from pursuing the complaints.
