Preparing for a complex trial is difficult; there are no shortcuts. It can be especially difficult for first-year associates who have never taken a case all the way through trial.

In 2014, I had a case set for trial in November. One of our first-year associates started in late August, and the first thing on his agenda was to get familiar with the case and get ready for trial. With no trial experience (in fact, he found out he passed the bar while we were out of town preparing, and the judge swore him in just before opening statements) he didn’t have the first clue as to what needed to be done in order to prepare for trial. In addition to getting myself ready, I also had to think about the best way to help my colleague get ready.
