With small acquisitions or combinations dominating most recent law firm merger activity, the number of firm mergers completed through the third quarter remained almost identical this year to the same period in 2015, consulting company Fairfax Associates reported Friday.

Fairfax Associates tallied nine completed mergers involving U.S. firms during the first nine months of 2016, bringing the total for the first three quarters of the year to 43. That compares to a total of 42 mergers during the first three quarters of 2015, the company said.
