Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed former district judge Faith Johnson as Dallas County’s new district attorney, replacing Susan Hawk, who resigned from office in September after a long battle with mental illness.

Johnson , a Republican, served as a criminal court judge for 17 years until she lost her seat in 2006 when Democratic candidates swept all of the Dallas County’s county-wide elected offices. A former Dallas assistant DA, Johnson is set to be the county’s second African-American top prosecutor and serve the remaining two years of Hawk’s term.
