Dr. Bull returned this week to handle a wrongful death case against a wellness company headed by none other than his ex-wife, Isabella. Isabella and her company are famous for their fastidiousness, marketing lifestyle products aimed at perfecting the mind and body. But a smoothie sold by the company somehow became contaminated with bee pollen. An allergic woman died after consuming the drink and her widower sued, claiming actual and punitive damages that could bankrupt the company. Dr. Bull overcomes his emotional baggage in order to help his ex-wife win the case.

To be sure, this episode of Bull demonstrates the value that trial consultants can bring to litigation. At the outset, jury consultants excel in developing a case’s key themes. A good story is more persuasive than a bad story, and before anything else, a lawyer is a storyteller. Trial consultants understand this. They use their expertise in psychology as well as what they learn from mock juries to identify narratives that are more likely to prove persuasive. Perhaps more importantly, they also help identify vulnerabilities and weaknesses—gaps in the story—that a jury may give undue focus. Ultimately, they assist lawyers in constructing a unified trial presentation, one in which the evidence corroborates the core themes, and hopefully results in the desired outcome.
