The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has reversed a $16.7 million patent infringement verdict a Dallas federal jury awarded to a French citizen who alleged he owned the rights to a camshaft that is widely used in Chrysler vehicles.

The decision, in Melchior v. Hilite International, reversed the multimillion award won by Jean Melchior, a French holder of a patent for a cam phaser, an advanced automotive part that helps improve engine efficiency by slowing the vehicle’s timing. The design is used in the Chrysler Pentastar V6 engine which is used in Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles.
