Texas Supreme Court Justice James Baker, who helped lead the all-Republican high court toward the judicial center during the mid-1990s, will leave the court to take a job at Hughes & Luce on Sept. 1. Baker, a former justice on Dallas’ 5th Court of Appeals, will return to Dallas where he will co-chair the firm’s appellate section. Last year, he announced his intentions to leave the court but was not specific about whether he would complete his term. Baker was on vacation last week and could not be reached for comment by presstime on July 25.

On July 24, Gov. Rick Perry announced he intends to appoint Michael Schneider, chief justice of Houston’s 1st Court of Appeals, to fill Baker’s post. Schneider is also the Republican nominee for the seat Baker is vacating.
