A man who lost his sight because of prolonged back surgery has been awarded $21.8 million in his medical malpractice case by a Delaware County jury.

The verdict in favor of plaintiff Bruce Drainer was handed up in Delaware County Court of Common Pleas Senior Judge Charles Burr II's courtroom last week.

Drainer sued neurologist Dr. Hagop L. DerKrikorian, Riddle Memorial Hospital, and Society Hill Anesthesia Consultants and one of its doctors and anesthesia nurses. However, sources familiar with the case said the jury found only DerKrikorian, the doctor who performed Drainer's back surgery, liable.
