Markets like New York and Washington, D.C., can be tempting for midsized Pennsylvania firms looking to grow, but legal observers and recent events suggest that mergers are a better way to go in those high-priced markets.

“The mistake that certain firms make is that they have, I call it the ‘Field of Dreams’ mentality, that if they build the office, the work will come,” said Dan Binstock, recruiter at Garrison & Sisson in Washington. “It’s not that easy, and it requires firms to have a really strong and sound business justification and narrative for why they’re looking to grow in certain practice areas, how their firm is uniquely positioned.”
