In an effort to stay on top of the constant evolution of technology and the ever-present threat of backlog, courts across the state are embracing the use of special discovery masters.
Although not every jurisdiction has set up its own special master program, several state and federal jurisdictions across Pennsylvania have set up a variety of special master programs to deal specifically with technology, or complex litigation that could easily overwhelm the court system.
Perhaps one of the most progressive jurisdictions utilizing special masters is the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania, which set up a special e-discovery master program about five years ago.
