The jury hearing the first pelvic mesh case in Philadelphia handed up a $5.5 million verdict Monday, and sent the case to a second phase on punitive damages.

After more than two weeks of trial and one day of deliberation, the jury in Hammons v. Ethicon delivered its verdict Monday afternoon, finding the company that designed and manufactured the Gynecare Prolift had failed to properly warn about the risks of the product, and that the company's negligence caused the plaintiff's harm. The jury consisted of seven women and five men.

The plaintiff, Patricia Hammons, had alleged the product was negligently designed, and Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Ethicon failed to properly warn health professionals about the risks of the Prolift device.
