Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams pleaded not guilty Thursday afternoon to a new batch of federal corruption charges alleging he misused campaign money and government vehicles.

Standing beside Williams as he delivered his not guilty plea to U.S. Magistrate Judge Timothy Rice in Philadelphia's federal courthouse was Thomas Burke, Williams' attorney and longtime friend since the two were junior prosecutors together in the District Attorney's Office.

Williams, 50, appeared stoic in the face of the now 29 charges against him. Outside the courthouse, Burke called the new charges against Williams “laughable” and said they were an attempt by the government to throw as many charges at Williams as possible in the hopes that something would stick. He also claimed the government declined to file the new charges at the beginning of the case because the allegations were weak.
